Mimi Read has been a working journalist since 1981. Her writing is characterized by sharp reporting, fresh language and the ability to bring to life a broad range of subjects, from design, architecture, food, travel, art and books to education, psychology and health care.

After graduating magna cum laude from Brown University in 1980 with a degree in literature, Ms. Read became a staff reporter and Sunday magazine writer for The Times-Picayune in New Orleans. Later, she was an assistant professor of journalism at the University of New Hampshire at Durham for a year, and then lived in Manhattan and wrote about architecture and design for New York Newsday, where she held a staff position. Since 1990, she has lived in New Orleans and freelanced for national magazines and newspapers. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, The New Yorker, House Beautiful, Elle Décor, O the Oprah Magazine, Food & Wine, Travel & Leisure and many other publications.
